Farr West and Sierra Controls Business Development Manager

We are in search of a full-time Business Development Manager to join our team in Reno, Nevada. This position will be a mix of business development and marketing, overseeing a marketing coordinator and assisting with outreach for both Farr West Engineering and Sierra Controls, LLC. Farr West is a growing company that specializes in utility engineering and water resources. We are looking for someone to assist the company with strategic planning, growth, outreach, marketing, proposal management, and leadership. This is an exciting and challenging position ideally suited for a creative, self-motivated individual.

Primary Responsibilities

Working in a cross-functional, team environment, the Business Development Manager will support growth initiatives and marketing activities in a growing market, including proposal and statement of qualifications development/management, Requests for Proposals (RFP) / Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) compliance reviews, coordination of the proposal development process, working with company leadership, technical writing/editing, and a range of other internal and external tasks.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a challenging environment, collaborating on high-level documents with a team of individuals with a wide range of personality types, and juggling multiple deadlines and assignments.

The Business Development Manager position requires a significant amount of work in research, collaboration, technical writing, and creative thinking. A successful Business Development Manager has strong organizational skills, writing/composition experience, excellent attention to detail, communication skills, along with the ability to develop projects, schedules and work under multiple deadlines with diplomacy.  Details, engagement, and organization are the keys to being successful in this position.

Previous work in engineering, construction, or consultant services is a must. In this position, the business development manager will be required to balance multiple priorities, such as:

  • Identify and investigate new business opportunities, capture and gather information, realize client needs. 
  • Contribute to the strategic development of a sector or a client segment. 
  • Continue to build a portfolio of projects that demonstrate company success and portray company capabilities. 
  • Prepare competitive proposals, responding to the requirements of an RFP/RFQ.
  • Establish partnerships/consortium arrangements. 
  • Take ownership in the management of the whole tendering cycle and coordinate the proposal team in a collegial way to deliver attractive proposals responding to the client’s needs and in line with Farr West’s Business Development process requirements.
  • Manage a marketing coordinator assigned to assist with proposals, social media, resumes, marketing tasks both internally and externally.


Ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills with ability to schedule and manage multiple pursuits, proposals, outreach efforts, and internal strategic practices.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Ideal candidate will have strong applicable experience in the A/E/C industry.
  • Strong communication (both written and verbal), diplomacy, and collaboration skills. Positive attitude, flexibility, and energy are critical for success.
  • Experience in Adobe In-Design, Illustrator, or expert MS Word skills.
  • Understanding of marketing management, database management, including updating and rewriting resumes and project descriptions to support client and program development activities.
  • Strong design skills and graphic aptitude is preferred.

Applicants should have at least 7 years of experience, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, hydrogeology or field related to water resources. Prior employment with a hydrogeologic or civil engineering firm that specializes in utility engineering, water, sewer, and water resource planning projects is preferred. The ideal candidate will have substantial technical experience in a field related to water resources and will have significant experience with the internal management of a department or division for an engineering firm. Civil Engineer (P.E.) - Water Resources Project Manager

Farr West Engineering has an exciting opportunity to join its team in Reno, Nevada. For over 15 years, Farr West Engineering (Farr West) has been building a reputation as a leader in municipal engineering and utility planning for local governments throughout Nevada and California.

Applicants should have approximately 3-7 years of experience, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or environmental engineering and be a licensed civil engineer or certified engineer-in-training (EIT). Marketing Coordinator

We are in search of a full-time Marketing Coordinator to join our team in Reno, Nevada. This position will be a mix of “traditional media” marketing, and some social media outreach. Farr West is a growing company that specializes in utility engineering and water resources. We are looking for someone to assist the company with winning new projects through proposal submittals and outreach. This is an exciting and challenging position ideally suited for a creative, self-motivated individual.

Plans Examiner

Location: Dayton, Lyon County

Responsibilities/Duties:

·        Reviews residential and commercial building permit applications for completeness and compliance with current federal, state, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations relating to but not limited to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, framing, etc.; reviews specifications and building plans; consults with originator to clarify or make corrections as needed.

·        Coordinates plan review process with staff from other units, divisions, or departments; monitors assembly of items required to fulfill conditions of approval placed on projects by the Planning Commission; ensures all required documents are collected and reviewed and approved by the required divisions or departments.

·        Assists the public at the front counter, by telephone, by email, or video conference, answering questions and providing information regarding building permit applications.

·        Occasionally performs (as needed to fill in for inspection personnel) routine site inspections of construction projects and private sewer lateral installations as assigned; enforces codes by issuing instructions, recommendations, citations, and stop work orders; enters field inspection reports into an automated record system.  

·        Prepares and maintains various forms, reports, records, and public information handouts. Coordinates the dissemination of information via the county’s website, social media platforms and building department counter with other members of the department and city staff.  Assists in the review of procedures, processes and software used for the receipt and review of plans and application materials for the purpose of improvement.

·        Attends and participates in professional group meetings to stay abreast of new trends, innovations, and procedures in plan checking and plan review; research emerging products and enhancements and their applicability to meet city needs. Monitors changes in regulations and technology that may affect city operations; implements policy and procedural changes after approval. Receives, investigates, and responds to difficult and sensitive problems and complaints in a professional manner; identifies and reports findings and takes necessary corrective action. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Experience:

·        Two (2) years of building plan review experience consistent with the requirements of this job description with another jurisdiction or consulting firm/agency, one (1) year of which was as a certified Plans Examiner are required; or,

·        Two years (2) years of experience performing plan review duties.

Education: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade is required. Related college coursework is highly desirable.

LICENSEAND/OR CERTIFICATE:

·        Possession of a valid Class C Nevada Driver's License is required.

·        Possession of a valid International Code Council (ICC)Residential Plans Examiner Certificate is required.

·        Possession of a valid International Code Council (ICC)Commercial Plans Examiner Certificate is required.

Land Survey Student Intern

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

·  Split time between field surveying as part of acrew, and office work including data processing and mapping.

o  Includes training and use of drone, optical andGPS equipment

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Report to, and partner with, the Vice President of Corporate Strategy to develop the overall marketing strategy that supports corporate goals and objectives for growth
