  • Senior Civil Engineer

    Senior Civil Engineer

    Farr West Engineering is a growing civil engineering firm with offices in Reno and Elko, Nevada that specialize in water and wastewater utilities and water resources.     Applicants should have approximately 10 years of experience, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or environmental engineering and be a licensed civil engineer.     We are looking for a licensed Electrical Engineer with 7 years of experience in professional design of Electrical Systems for water, wastewater, and irrigation controls systems. Experience in several PCIS and SCADA technologies is a plus. Must have an Electrical Professional Engineer (P.E.) License in Nevada and California.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Manage multiple concurrent Electrical Design projects.
    • Provide technical guidance on assigned projects for the project team.
    • Work with other Sr. Engineers and Project Engineers to provide a quality experience for our customers and successful integration to meet each customer’s needs.
    • Review Proposals to ensure technical accuracy for own projects.
    • Work with Engineering Teams on the coordinated Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Design for projects including stamped engineering plans and specifications.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Design of all industrial electrical and building electrical systems.
    • Coordinate electrical plans for PCIS and SCADA related projects with Controls Engineers.
    • Electrical schematics and panel design.
    • Project Documentation and O&M Manuals.
    • Provide prebid review, site surveys, and review of proposals for own projects.

    We are looking for a full-time AutoCAD designer to help develop high-quality water and wastewater utility designs in our Reno, Nevada office.  Qualified candidates will work directly with Farr West engineers and designers to assist in the delivery of quality design solutions. You should be a self-motivated individual and possess strong communication and organizational skills.

    Applicants must be proficient in AutoCAD. Proficiency in Civil 3D is a plus, but not required. Vocational level course work in GIS, AutoCAD, and related technical work with an Associate’s degree preferred.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Review and interpret engineering and architectural plans and specifications.
    • Communicate with engineer, client, contractor, and public in professional manner.
    • Observe the daily progress, workmanship, material testing, and sampling procedures of construction projects as required by the contract.
    • Provide daily inspection reports and surveillance of construction work.
    • Inspect and ensure compliance with construction materials, including workmanship, construction, and installation of various systems in accordance with design plans and contract documents.
    • Coordinate schedule for independent testing firms (3rd party testing) if required services are authorized by the client.
    • Conduct construction inspections to resolve problems on the project, and work with engineer on solutions to the issues.
    • Inform contractor and construction representatives of safety violations, subject to the limitations.
    • Verify contractor’s maintenance of accurate as-built drawings on a weekly basis and provide comments on completed as-built drawings.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction of municipal utilities, preferably water and wastewater utilities, treatment plants, roadways, and facilities.
    • Hold current OSHA 30‐hour certificate or similar safety training courses in excavations/trenching, scaffolding and fall protection, confined spaces, lifting/loading
    • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with client and contractor in performance of duties.
    • Ability to manage numerous concurrently phased construction activities.
    • Ability to lift 20 pounds, work long days in the field, drive to various jobsites, and travel to remote areas and stay overnight.
    • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, processes, and methods) mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing engineering customs and practices in expressing ideas, designs, and data in drawings.
    • Plan, organize, review, and evaluate the work of engineers, contractors, and others.
    • Design principles, mathematics, and construction industry practice for the solution of civil, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing engineering problems.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, supervisory and planning skills.
    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (email) applications.

    Building Inspector

    Farr West is currently seeking a Building Inspector to work in our community development department.  This position will be responsible for inspecting construction for building code compliance; investigating building code violations; reviewing building plans and specifications; answering questions related to building code compliance; and performing other work as assigned.

    Farr West is currently looking for various levels of assistance as shown below.  Salary will be determined upon experience.

    Building Inspector I:  Substantial experience in at least one of the building trades or completion of an Associate of Arts degree in Construction Technology or experience equivalent that can be demonstrated.

    Building Inspector II:  At least one certificate issued by the ICC plus one year experience in performing building inspections.

    Building Inspector III:  At least two certificates issued by the ICC plus two years’ experience in performing building inspections and checking building plans.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those which are least likely to be essential functions for any single position in this class.

    1. Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial construction for compliance with building codes and regulations.
    1. Assists builders and general public in understanding building rules, regulations, and procedures.
    1. Reviews building plans, specifications, applications, and documentation for compliance with applicable codes, setbacks and regulations; calculates building permit fees.
    1. Investigates complaints received from the public and from other public agencies regarding violations of applicable codes.
    1. Inspects commercial buildings, as needed for the issuance of a business license.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT

    Knowledge and Ability:

    Knowledge of building construction techniques and procedures; Uniform Building Codes.

    Ability to perform basic building inspections; read building plans and specifications; secure compliance with building codes.

    Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel and Outlook), ability to download and e-mail photographs, PDF’s or other electronic files, previous use or ability to learn Google Calendars and Google Mail and use or ability to learn the proficient use of building department tracking software (Interlocking and MUNIS)

    Special Requirements:

    Ability to obtain certifications issued by the ICC and ability to complete continuing education courses. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

    Experience and Training:

    Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Strength, stamina and dexterity to sit in vehicles operating on rough roads; walk on uneven or slippery surfaces; move from place to place within the office and at construction sites; to repeatedly stand and sit. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds; reach for items above and below desk level; climb up and down ladders; enter confined spaces and other areas; visual acuity sufficient to read gauges and observe conditions at construction sites in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work in outdoor and indoor environments with intermittent to frequent exposure to a variety of extreme weather conditions including heat, rain, snow, cold, wind, and dust. Occasional work in confined areas. Work is typically performed independently.

     

  • Marketing Coordinator

    Marketing Coordinator

    Farr West and Sierra Controls Marketing Coordinator

    We are in search of a full-time Marketing Coordinator to join our team in Reno, Nevada. This position will be a mix of “traditional media” marketing, and some social media outreach. Farr West is a growing company that specializes in utility engineering and water resources. We are looking for someone to assist the company with winning new projects through proposal submittals and outreach. This is an exciting and challenging position ideally suited for a creative, self-motivated individual.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Working in a cross-functional, team environment, the Marketing Coordinator will support marketing activities in a growing market, including proposal and statement of qualifications development, Requests for Proposals (RFP) compliance reviews, coordination of the proposal development process, recording and distributing meeting content, technical writing/editing, and a range of other internal tasks.  The successful candidate will have experience working in a challenging environment, collaborating on documents with a team of individuals with a wide range of personality types, and juggling multiple deadlines and assignments.

    The Marketing Coordinator position requires a significant amount of independent work in research, collaboration, technical writing, and creative thinking. A successful Marketing Coordinator has strong organizational skills, writing/composition experience, excellent attention to detail, communication skills, along with the ability to develop project schedules and work under multiple deadlines with diplomacy.  Details and organization are the keys to being successful in this position.

    Previous work in engineering, construction, or consultant services is preferred. In this position, the coordinator will be required to balance multiple priorities, such as writing project descriptions, helping draft a waterline or pump station proposal, preparing a PowerPoint for a Board of Commissioners meeting, and editing technical content for an electrical contractor’s brochure with competing deadlines.
    Ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills with ability to schedule and manage multiple proposals with tight deadlines, both independently and as part of a team.

    Ideal Candidate:

    • Ideal candidate will have strong applicable experience in document proofreading and editing.
    • Strong communication (both written and verbal), diplomacy, and collaboration skills. Positive attitude, flexibility, and energy are critical for success.
    • Previous experience in proposal management for engineering/construction industry is preferred.
    • Understanding of marketing database management, including updating and rewriting resumes and project descriptions to support client and program development activities, is preferred.
    • Strong design skills and graphic aptitude is preferred.

     

    Position Requirements:

    • Position requires proficiency with Adobe InDesign and MS Office products (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and OneNote). Applicable experience creating large, multi-page documents using styles in both InDesign and Word is preferred.
    • Bachelor’s Degree required–preference for degree in Marketing, Communications, English, or Journalism.
    • 1-3+ years of marketing and/or technical writing, document layout and production experience in a corporate environment is preferred.

    We are looking for a talented Project Assistant to work with our engineering Project Managers.  Some of the responsibilities will include:

    Job description

    • Document management: Assembling specifications, reviewing and editing technical documents, copying, binding, filing, and creating and managing document templates.
    • Project management assistance: Assist with permit tracking, project scheduling, project billing and collections, data input, communications, contract tracking, and project closeout.
    • Construction management assistance: Assist Project Managers with project bidding and construction management activities.  Create and maintain “Request for Information” logs, submittal logs, document management and record keeping.
    • Assist Business Development Manager with marketing materials, proposal writing, project descriptions, staff resumes, and technical writing.


    Preferred qualifications

    • Three years of experience working in the engineering, architecture or construction industry is preferred and/or evidence of experience in a similar role at another company.
    • Strong technical writing skills: editing, grammar correction, formatting, etc.
    • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) is preferred, especially in English, Marketing or Construction Management.
    • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products (MS Word, and MS Excel) – Experience with MS Project, Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, and Illustrator are preferred; and experience with WordPress is desirable.  Candidates who cannot demonstrate a strong proficiency with Microsoft Word will not be considered for this position.
